Alcohol May Have Been a Factor in Shooting
Around 11:45 PM on August 15th, Coweta County 911 received a 911 call from the residents of 5910 North Highway 29. The caller stated that a 35-year-old male had been shot in the chest.
As Coweta County Sheriff’s Officers responded to the scene, the caller advised 911 that the male had been shot by his Grand Father, who was still in the residence.
Upon arriving, the scene and weapon were secured and members of the Coweta County Fire Department were able to stabilize the patient, who had received a gunshot in the right chest, for transport to an awaiting Life Flight helicopter that landed at Arbor Springs Elementry nearby. The gunshot was described as a through and through, meaning the bullet had exited the chest of the victim.
The motive for the shooting has not been released, however, radio traffic does indicate that alcohol may have been a factor in the shooting.
The Grand Father, identified as Lanier Bernice Baswell, 82, was taken to the Sheriff’s Office where he was booked on charges of Assualt Aggravated with Firearm. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
As some may not be aware, the State of Georgia doesn’t have an “Attempted Murder” charge, only Murder. In it’s place, suspects are charged with Aggravated Assault.
We’ve reached out to the CCSO and will post more information as it becomes available.
