Just before 3 AM this morning, March 3rd, E911 started receiving calls from residence of the Shady Oaks Mobile Home Park located between Welcome Rd and West Highway 34 stating that there was a camper / RV that was on fire in Lot 6 of the park.
Both Coweta County Fire Rescue, as well as Coweta County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the scene, with CCSO deputies arriving within a few minutes of dispatch.
Dispatch relayed to arriving deputies that callers were reporting explosions from within the camper as the fire grew to engulf the entire structure. They were also reporting seeing at least 2 individuals running from the camper just prior to hearing an explosion and the fire starting.
When deputies arrived, they were given the same information by witnesses on the scene, however before being able to investigate, deputies joined with residence to put out a small fire that had been started at another structure within the park, using a water hose. While damaged, their efforts were able to stop the complete destruction of the second structure.
Units with CCFR arrived within 6 minutes of the initial fire, running lines across Welcome Rd, causing the road to be shut down for a period of time. They were able to get the fire under control and quickly put it out before moving to ensure fires at other parts of the park were also completely out.
CCFR Command staff called in the County Fire Marshall to investigate the cause of the fires, as both were believed to be vacant at the time. The investigation continues at this time.
